Initially, the broadcaster had only purchased the games from Brazil and Argentina as homemakers. The first of them shown on open TV was the 5-0 rout against Bolivia on 9 October. The following month, in November, on the 13th, the team beat Venezuela 1-0, in the second home game in the competition, also broadcast by Globo.
Although a goalless draw with Uruguay did not exactly set the world on fire, Paraguay did manage to go through their first five qualifying games without losing, beating Venezuela, and drawing their other four games, including a 1-1 draw with Argentina.
